Suttons Bay Tasting Rooms

Thirteen tasting rooms carry a Suttons Bay address, more than any other town on the Leelanau wine trail, and that number gets repeated as if they all sit on the main street. They do not, and this page exists to be straight about it. Two rooms are a genuine walk from downtown. The other eleven ring the village through the vineyard country to the west and south, most within a ten minute drive or a pleasant bike ride. Below is every one of them with its actual distance from the village center, because that is the number every other guide leaves out.

The village on foot

Gilchrist Farm Winery and Hop Lot Brewing Co. & Beer Garden are the honest walking options. Gilchrist Farm Winery sits right in the village, about 0.2 mi from the marina area, with food on site. Hop Lot Brewing Co. & Beer Garden is roughly a 0.6 mi walk out, a beer garden with a full kitchen that earns the stroll. Add the village itself, a real main street of restaurants, shops, galleries, and the marina, and two rooms plus a long lunch is a legitimate car-free afternoon. It is a smaller loop than the Suttons Bay name suggests, and a better one than most towns can offer at all.

Arriving by bike: the Leelanau Trail

The stronger no-car story is the ride in. The Leelanau Trail is a paved former rail corridor of about seventeen miles connecting Traverse City to Suttons Bay, rolling through orchards, hop fields, and vineyard country before ending at the edge of the village, an easy walk from the main street. One of its named trailheads is Shady Lane Road, which puts Shady Lane Cellars directly on the corridor for a tasting stop mid-ride. In season, BATA has run a bike bus between Traverse City and Suttons Bay that carries riders and their bikes, which turns the trail into a one-way ride with a seated trip home; it is a seasonal service, so check the current schedule before counting on it. Ride up, taste in the village, bus back is about as good as a designated-driver plan gets.

• 3 mi Black Star Farms (Suttons Bay) [Winery] (food on site) • Flagship destination with an inn, bistro, distillery, and tasting room. Polished and family-friendly; can get busy.
• 3.5 mi Silver Leaf Vineyard & Winery [Winery] • Off-the-beaten-path hilltop winery near Suttons Bay with a cabin-in-the-woods feel and sunset views. Small and personable; the sangria gets singled out.
• 3.8 mi Two K Farms Cidery & Winery [Cidery] (food on site) • Graft-to-glass estate cidery and winery with bay views. Dry ciders, heritage single-varieties, and apple wine; everything grown and made on site.
• 4.3 mi MAWBY Sparkling Wines [Winery] (food on site) • The region's sparkling specialist and arguably its most famous label. Methode champenoise focus, no still reds; the bubbles benchmark for any loop.
• 4.3 mi Big Little Wines [Winery] • Small-batch still-wine label co-located with MAWBY on Elm Valley Rd (shares the property and phone). Intimate room, attentive pours.
• 4.8 mi Ciccone Vineyard & Winery [Winery] • Hilltop vineyard and event barn with vineyard, bay, and rolling-hill views. Dry reds and Gewurztraminer. Founded by Madonna's father, Silvio Ciccone.
• 4.9 mi Suttons Bay Ciders [Cidery] (food on site) (dog friendly) • Hilltop cidery with one of the best West Bay views around, a wide cider range, wood-fired pizza, and a bonfire area. A nice non-wine change of pace.
• 4.9 mi Willow Winery & Vineyard [Winery] • Small, warm room under owners Tracy and Harry. Short but solid lineup leaning to dry Pinot Noir; strong on hospitality.
• 5.1 mi Three Trees Vineyard [Winery] • Small estate-only producer with a quiet, pine-scented room. Limited lineup led by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and open later than most.
• 5.9 mi Shady Lane Cellars [Winery] (food on site) • Laid-back former farm with fireplaces and Adirondack chairs under the pines. Strong dry whites; one of the few genuinely good winter visits.
